I know they say there's no such thing but it's true. :heehee:

There were eight of us at lunch and one person said "how about a quick competition where all the rest of us pay for the winner's lunch?". We all agreed.

He said "You have one minute to answer this question and the one we vote is the best will get the free lunch."

"In no more than three words, give an explanation of 'statistics'. Either positive or negative".

Only two of us answered in time. My answer was "Numbers without context". They liked my answer but asked me to give two examples.

I immediately thought of a garden example.

"I have a garden enclosed in an 800ft fence. If the garden is 200ft x 200ft (total 800ft) the area is 40,000sq ft. If it is 400ft long and 1ft wide (total 802ft) the area is 400ft. If it is circular with a perimeter of 800ft the area is approx. 51,000sq ft (or would that be round ft?). :roflol:

and an example that fitted one of our threads.

A statement in the news similar to:- the sale of EV's has increased by 50% in a year whereas those of petrol cars have only increased by 30%. That makes it seem that EV's are much more popular. Whereas if the sale of EV's last year was 10,000 cars then the increase was 5,000 and, if the sale of petrol cars last year was 80,000, then the increase was 24,000. Almost five time the sales but a lower percentage increase.

Statistics can show almost anything if you only give part of the explanation.

As Benjamin Disraeli said "There are three kinds of lies: lies, damned lies, and statistics."

If you've bothered to read this far, can you give other examples? :heehee:

If you want some fun with statistics, get your calculator ready, and watch some adverts for beauty, cosmetics, healthcare products, read the small print that appears at the bottom, then calculate how many people actually 'agree' with what they've claimed.

One I saw earlier said 81% of 86 people. So 69.66 people then. Not that many really, but what happened to the 0.34 people out of the group of 70?

I suppose that's reasonable today. I paid nearly £8 for chips and sausage in batter last week, and that was to take out.

The old saying 'as cheap as chips' no longer holds. I can take my wife and kids to weatherspoons for a main course, dessert and glass of pop and pay less than if we'd gone to the chippy. I discovered this one day when the queue for the chippy was a mile long and I got sick of waiting so we went to the pub instead for lunch instead.

Well I've been press ganged into jury service next week and I'm informed I can claim £5.71 a day for lunch.

These poor old judges, who I presume can claim the same amount, really do have to slum it.
Or are we all equal but some are more equal than others.;)

It was a posh pub two course lunch and that is their mid week cheap lunch. Their main menu has fish and chips at £18 and steaks at £30. You don't get them on the set lunch menu. Before Covid it was £13 for two courses.

I only live 2 miles from the courts, but will probably take me 30 minutes to get there on a good day.
They sent me a letter saying "we will NOT pay parking charges" and people should use the park and ride, both park and ride sites closed years ago, one is now a retail site.
So I called them and they said they will pay parking charges and that's "just an old letter".

If I could walk there I would but just the distance from the nearest car park enough for me these days.
To cover the 2 mile journey would mean using two buses, and then they wonder why nobody uses public transport.:dunno:

With great respect @shiney , your examples were not examples of statistics, but just pure maths. Considering that it got you a free lunch, well worth the slightly differently angled set of proof you provided

To mix the pudding up further, don't we all love probabilities? :dancy: If you toss a (regular) coin 9 times and always get heads, what is the probability that the tenth toss will be a tail?

Yes, I do have direct debit for national lottery, that's probably the best outcome of my course of probabilities in Uni where the main focus was on 1-2-1 sessions where the sweating professor "forgot" to switch off his computer showing rather improbable acts of procreation.

Or perhaps that was a test and I failed?
