    rts.

I have canker on my mature cherry tree and really need some step by steps on how to go about rescuing it.

I had a guy in in spring who took the top shooting branch off and he didn`t say anything about it at the time so not getting him in again and really would prefer to either do it myself or get a surgeon in-any recognised bodies I can get someone from?

Or even better for the pocket how do I do it myself and when?

Hi Claire, not good news it does look like canker and looks to be in the main trunk probably the best thing to do would be to take it down and burn it to prevent it speading to any neighbouring trees,if it had been a branch that was affected it could be cut back and treated but the main trunk is a problem,Pro or Tree surfer will probably know better so wait for their advice.

Hello and thankyou for taking the time to help me.

Obviously this is a blow, its the 2nd tree I`ve lost in about three weeks. I will be optimistic and hope for better things.

I have always loved silver birch so will replace it with one of those and watch it grow.

Sorry if i sound maudlin-I am a soft sod and get quite attached to individual trees and plants.

That's a shame to lose a nice tree. A question for the experts: Is there anything we can do to prevent this happening on other trees?

Not that I know of JWK cherries and indeed most fruit trees are suceptible to this, it is a wind borne pathogen fransfered by spores so the sooner it can be destroyed by cutting down the affected tree and burning it the better for the surrounding trees.
