I got back home today to be told by my in-laws that they had spent 1/2 an hour watching a pair of green woodpeckers! I've never seen one so I shall be looking hard tomorrow. Also Hubbie saw 6 swallows last week and I missed them too. I need to get out more [IMG]

We have only seen our Green Woodpeckers four times in ten years, they have probably been around more but not when we have, You might get lucky Celia. their call gives them away, once heard never forgotten. [IMG]

I think that is the type we have around here.
When I take the dog for a walk they fly up out of the long grass screeching, a pair the other day stayed on the ground pretty close to me, but as usual I didn't have my camera at that time.

Not easy to get a good look at.

Pete, they spend a lot of time on grassy areas compared to the Spotted ones. The sound is high pitched, almost a laugh (hence the old nickname of Yaffle).

I've not seen the spotted ones around here but we have lots of the green ones, not in the garden though, only once did I see one in the garden, mostly in the park.

I saw my first swallows this week too - in Somerset.

Celia, before I was interested in birds I must have been going around with my eyes closed, because now I want to see them it is amazing how much more I am noticing them now. Same with all wildlife. Seek and ye shall find!!!!

(Is it just my computer or has every post in this thread been posted double!)

After encouraging birds by planting trees for the last 20 years we have just started to get woodpeckers coming into the garden and even onto the bird table.:thumb:
