Years ago, before I had any interest in gardening, I found a most beautiful, delightfully fragrant, stunning Rose that I really admired and wanted to take home.

She worked as a barmaid in my favourite pub. Sadly for me, even my most powerful, smoothest lines were completely ineffective on her and I never got to take that Rose home with me.

              Thanks Sheal ,

This is a Rose that I've bought new this year and is definitely a Rosa Rugosa......

              WP_20160719_002.jpg

PS... I agree with Woo, I've never seen or heard of a Dog Rose being any colour than White/Pale Pink.

I have an excellent book that covers all the wild flowers of Britain and I'll try and photograph the relevant page to post on here tomorrow:)

                Thank you, @wiseowl

Did you also show her the thorns on this rose? I have a clearer picture of those now. As you may notice, they are completely different to the rugosa spines ...

                CIMG0012.JPG

Another thing which differs is the size of the rose (hence the thumb to give perspective) and the texture of the petals. This is my rugosa rose and the petals are almost "papery" in texture.

                CIMG0013.JPG

So, these are the differences (thorns and bloom size/texture) which suggest to me that the pink rose which popped up here is not a rugosa (as you may recall, I had 3 different types of rugosa in my previous garden, so I'm no stranger to them :heehee: )

I don't know if this is of any use, these are the clearest photos I could take......

                  WP_20160720_003.jpg

PS, the Rose at the bottom of the first picture is our other wild Rose, Rosa Arvensis, white flowers ( always cup shaped not flat like R. Canina ) and more rounded hips.

Just throwing a spanner in the works! Could someone along the way have crossed the two producing a hybrid? :)

Good afternoon @"M" my friend I have just received an email from Jane from Pounsley Plants

                              Dear Woo
The rose you describe and picture is Rosa rugosa Scabrosa.
An excellent and healthy variety as long as it is not in deep shade..

Thank you, @wiseowl your efforts are very much appreciate.

I've gone back through my albums because I was fairly sure I had Scabrosa in my previous garden and these are the rugosa roses I had in my previous garden (taken 2013):-

                              DSCF6403.JPG

                              DSCF6398.JPG

                              DSCF6402.JPG

In the last one, the thorns are the typical spiney "rugosa" style thorns.

I took the liberty of looking up "Scabrosa" and I notice one of the distinguishing features are the flowers are described as "large" (up to 5" across).

My rose, which is being identified as a rugosa "Scabrosa", is much smaller (or, I have giant hands and no one has bothered to tell me :heehee:  )
