I got my electricity bill yeasterday. After moving the meter outside at enormous cost the bill was estimated and wildly inaccurate by nearly £120 to their benefit. They wanted to almost double my direct debit to cover payments. I recalculated the bill and found that if they had read the meter I would have been in credit by £10. This means that if I had let them increase my payments I would have been in credit by £630 this time next year! Why don't they just come and read the meter before trying to rip you off?

I had a similar situation with both gas and electric when we first looked at changing to direct debit.

The amounts they wanted us to pay a month were more than double what we had calculated. When I rang to complain they reduced the amount to something nearer what I had worked it out to be. 12 months later we had a significant credit and they wrote to us advising they were going to reduce both direct debits again.

I think they rely on people just accepting what they say?

I definitely try and ring in my own meter readings.

I definitely try and ring in my own meter readings, which helps a little.
