Hello every body I am new to the site, and think I may have made a drastic mistake with my new summer raspberry canes. I have was told to prune the single cane as soon as growth appeared but I pruned the cane when it was in bud rather than waiting for new shoots from below ground. Is this terminal ?

I am worried as there is no growth from the ground and every body else has told me there canes are thriving. I pruned them about 3 weeks ago any help would be much appreciated many thanks.

Good evening Mark and welcome to the site. Assuming you mean you pruned the stem you bought I would say, don`t worry. Have a bit of patience, I don`t think you`ve killed the plants.:thumb:

If you have just planted new Raspberry canes, and if they are Summer fruiting (rather than Autumn) then they should be cut down to "almost nothing" - which is what it sounds like you have done?

You won't get a crop this year, but the idea is that by forgoing a crop this year the plant devotes more energy to making a stronger base, and you will have much better crops in years to come.

The new canes should produce "suckers" this season, and next year they will grow (in the Spring) to produce the canes that bear the fruits
