I used to know the name of this one..

    but its gone now. As well as knowing the name of this plant, I also have a question about it.

    I've cut away most of last year's leave, just leaving the fresh growth. My question is... should the exposed root structure be covered up with soil or left exposed like it is at the moment.

    Is it a bergenia?

    If so I think the stems just trail across the surface like they are in your picture.

    Yes it`s Bergenia, also known as Elephant`s Ears. And, as Pete says, that`s it`s normal growing habit.:gnthb:
