Good morning @Snorky85 my friend IMHO that pot is unsuitable:smile:

I would say at the very least 25-litres in volume or perhaps a half-barrel, while for a climber it should be bigger.

The best compost to use is a loam-based John Innes No 3 to which 10 to 20 percent multi-purpose compost or very well-rotted manure may be added for richness. Position the container before filling with compost as it may be too heavy to move once planted up.

Roses love sunshine and should receive sun for at least half the day. However it is important that container-grown plants do not dry out or they will become prone to powdery mildew. If possible position the container so that it is shaded for part of the day, leaving the plant itself in full sun.Drainage, keep the pots raised on feet and add a drainage layer of gravel at the bottom to ensure good winter drainage, feeding: Roses use up food reserves quickly and grow better if top-dressed each spring with a granular rose fertiliser. Additional feeding may be required as per the manufacturer's recommendations. Avoid feeding after August as soft growth may be damaged by cold winters, mulching: Mulch with a 5cm (2in) top-dressing of well-rotted garden compost or manure to help retain moisture and enrich the compost,top-dressing: Every second year, remove the top 5cm (2in) of compost and replace with a fresh layer,;)

Good morning woo! Thanks for that info. Going to look for a bigger better trough. :)

Got the watering system set up so hopefully it wont be too dry.

That wall is SSE facing so gets sun most f the day in summer until about 4, so i'd have thought it would be ok there?

The trough arrived the day after ordering and the rose arrived yesterday!

It's been soaking over night and has now been planted.

Put broken pots and grit etc of bottom of trough. Soil is a mix of general purpose and rotted manure. Added in rose food. Sprinkled generous about of mycorrhizal fungi on the roots over the hole and potted up. Gave it a good kelching and topped with a bit of extra manure.

              Fingers crossed it does well!

Dotty looking very proud of the planting! IMG_6671.JPG
