I've had a pear tree in my garden for the last 10 years. I've always thought it was a Williams bon Chretien pear. Recently, a friend said she thought it was a Comice ! I did some research and, frankly, it could conceivably be a Comice, Baldwin, Pineapple among others. I've just picked them (mid October) - flesh is quite firm. So, could anyone help positively identify what it actually is ???

While on the subject of this pear tree it seems to suffer from something which I thought known as "peach leaf curl" but info on the web seems to say that it is only found on peaches, nectarines and almonds. It happens most years and early in the growing season leaves go black and curl up. Any ideas what it is and how to treat it ??

There are so many types you might be better taking them to a fruit tasting event, some RHS gardens run them at this time of year with experts on hand. The Wisley event is on right now. The RHS do a fruit ID service free for members.

The leaf curl could be aphids.
They invade the underside of the leaves and cause the leaves to curl backwards.
As to variety, I wouldn't like to guess.

I agree with John but have a comment about what you have said. If the photos are very recent then they are unlikely to be Williams as they tend to be early pears. Williams and Comice do look alike in shape but Williams are usually longer than those in the picture whereas Comice are more stubby. If it was a choice between those two I would say Comice.

Good afternoon @barryman my friend I have a William's pear tree and the fruit are always ready mid to late September and looking at the fruit I would say it is a Williams pear it is known as an early one but that is because most other pears come later ,there are a lot of sports of the William or Bartlett pear:smile:

ps I could be wrong as I haven't been right for 70 years:heehee::heehee::heehee:

Well, it looks like it's a toss-up between Williams and Comice. Either way they are tasty pears.

Re the leaf curl I mentioned, maybe it is something called Fireblight which is a fungal infection ?? Anyone know a sure-fire way to eradicate fungal infections ??
