egg2.JPG egg1.JPG I found this tiny egg yesterday, on the ground in a country lane (why would it be there and not near a tree?). Can you identify it?

It could be that it was stolen by a Magpie and accidently dropped on the way to eating it somewhere.

Yes Definetley a Blackbirds egg shell. When the chicks hatch out of the eggs the parent bird will usually collect up the shell in its beak and fly off to discard it away from the nest because all bird egg shells are white in colour inside the actual egg and are all different colours on the outside depending on the species of birds. If the egg shells are left with the white side facing upwards then the shells can possibly be seen by predators who will raid the nest and eat the chicks/or eggs so Mother Nature has taught the birds to get rid of all evidence that the nest is occupied plus it is more hygienic to have a nice clean tidy nest for the chicks to grow up in.Another reason why the parents either eat or remove the chicks poo from the nest to keep everything smelling sweet so to speak:smile:

Been waiting for somebody else to post ...

            Turdus Merula

Their nomenclature must be based upon what they do on washing left in the garden during the Elderberry season.
