This shrub which is currently about a meter tall is in my friend's garden and I think it is a
Diospyros (Persimmon). Can anyone ID or confirm my thoughts please.

The fruit looks like pepino, so does the flower?

I think you will find persimmon is a tree.
When I last had a go at pepino, it was a sprawling plant that didn't really like our short summers.

The fruit should taste similar to a melon although belonging to the same family as tomato.

:) Hi Pete. Don't think it is a Peoino (Cucumber here) ... neither do they (Portuguese). Here is another fruit photo ... the plant is only a year or so old given to them by a friend, the Portuguese are very bad at knowing the names of fruit and flora :hate-shocked: ...

It's definitely not persimmon, Diospyros. As pete said, that's a tree, with white flowers and rounded fruits that turn a uniform bright orange. Looks like Solanum muricatum to me too:)

Thank you @pete and @noisette47 I will send the link along to my friend ... she and her father surely would have known if it was Diospyros anyway! :rolleyespink:

Yes, my money's on pepino. The flowers are Solanaceae. Persimmon, as others have said, is a small tree with nondescript flowers and 4 prominent sepals. I used to live in China and my neighbours had one that shed spent flowers over the wall.
