My grandparents have this tree appear in the last couple of years and would love to know what it is. Any ideas?

The bark doesn't look right for a young Oak though Pete.. Also surely a Holm oak would not have suddenly sprung up to that size in a couple of years surely..

OK not quite worked out how when you click on one picture in one post you suddenly get all the pictures in that thread?

I reckon thats Quercus ilex, (holm oak) but at least 5 yrs old or more.

Well was thinking about it being a Holm & I reckon if it was a Holm then I would go for a min of 10yrs for a trunk like that. More like 15yrs perhaps.

Thanks everyone so far. They say it's definitely only appeared in last 2 years? So either they haven't noticed it sneaking up before that or it's something very similar to the holm

I shall have to call them and ask them to smell it. My initial thoughts were some kind of bay due to shape of leaves. It is approx 9ft tall and 2/3ft wide

I very much doubt that even a Bay tree could grow to that size in two years.
Prunus laurocerus and Prunus lustianica both self seed around here, both fast growing but never likely to reach those proportions in two years.

Laurus nobilis (bay) does not self seed around my way, so cant comment but the leaves look totally wrong.:dunno:

Bam, your grandparents will probably have very large evergreen trees growing nearby, those are holm oaks and the parent plant. May well have been planted there by squirrels. As Pete says it have been there certainly more than two years more like 5.

When I click on the OP's post I get two pics and one is the that Marley put up which also appears to be off the internet?

I'm not sure what the tree is but it certainly looks older than two years to me and I've had the Laurus noblis here and I did have a Prunus lusitanica for 18 years in the UK and I am not sure it is either ...

It may be the Holm Oak .. I live in a place called Carrasqueira which means the place of the Holm Oak ... so I shall have to investigate ... :pcthwack:
