We were given what's described as a 'patio allotment' for Christmas and aren't sure what to do with it!

I've already whittled down all the pots on our patio (which isn't very big) to a standard bay and some parsley, all the herbs are now in the ground. But, anyway...

It's about 30" long by 15" wide buy 12" deep and has two compartments.

What can I grow in it? We've thought of baby carrots, but what else can we grow, preferably in rotation to make full use of it? I've been growing flowers and shrubs for years but never vegetables.

Also, the patio is sort of south west facing and gets sun for most of the day so should be OK. Tomatoes in pots were very productive last year!

    That size?

Chives and chillies, or a variety of herbs.

i always grow some cut and come again lettuce on my patio - you can rush out of the kitchen and grab some so you cant get much fresher than that. also what abou some successional rows of radish (multicoloured look nicer) and spring onions?

(just noticed steve has said the same lol) oh just for a change some multicoloured chard - cut it when the leaves are small and use as a salad

Thanks for the suggestions - I'm afraid I'm not a big fan of radishes, but I might try chillies, cut and come again lettice and give the baby carrots a go!

You could grow pretty much anything in a container that size. Even give baby new potatos a try.

I wouldn't grow anything that takes up a lot of space like spuds or brassicas though, or things that need a long growing season like baby corn.

I'd go for cut and come again lettuce, baby stir-fry greens and spring onions.
