This rather odd looking shrub has appeared amongst my ivy - sown by birds, not by me. I thought initially it was a holly, though the leaves are small, but then came these odd yellow flowers.

    Anyone know what this is.

That's a seedling Berberis darwinii Fran. Eventually it will develop into a large shrub and be smothered in flowers every spring. Flower colour varies somewhat; good named forms being a particularly vivid orange. All are very showy and well worth having - especially if they turn up for free!

Just do not plant it too close to anywhere where you may have to walk!
Ours get magnificent berries which the blackbirds adore, trouble is they stain everywhere bright blue afterwards.

Brilliant thanks - its currently growing in a shady corner amongst the ivy. From your descriptions I shall leave it alone and enjoy its splendour. Twill brighten a dark corner, when in flower that is. What colour are the berries?
