    Hi
I created a new pond last year. This year I want to double the size. I had a few tadpoles but birds ate them before their back legs were formed. Before I started digging I noticed these clumps if floating bubbles. Can anyone tell me if this is frogspawn ir just rotting vegetation please.

I think it might be frog spawn with algae growing on it, but really need a closer picture, looks like frogs are guarding it.

Well, still not sure but it could well be frog spawn, can you get it out in a net? if its spawn it will be jelly blobs with a black centre.

As @pete says, if its spawn it very obvious with the 10 - 20mm clear sphere with a black center.

From your pic it looks more like String /Blanket Algae that has got some bright green top growth that the recent sunny weather has caused.

Scoop it out and leave by the side of the pond for a day so any insects can return to the pond.

Surpised the bird have taken all the tadpoles when you have that areas covered by the bridge, do you have any fish in there as well.

Will do thanks. No fish. It's mainly for frogs and the birds. There were only about 6 tadpoles and a few hundred birds. Clearly outnumbered. Hoping some will migrate my way this year I've got 2 pond plants for this year so hoping it'll provide them more cover.

Tadpoles need cover, they like weed and the frogs will lay the spawn on weed so that it stays near the surface.
It sinks without something to give it buoyancy.

I thought having a bridge and pebbles at the Base if the pond with pebbles at the shallow end leading to a beach area was enough. Hopefully the plants will help matters this year
