I had some tasty tomatoes from a shop so I thought I'd plant their seeds and grow my own. They started off looking healthier than my other tomato types. Now something odd has happened, but only to some of them (my other plants do not seem to be affected).

They are growing hunched over and bent. Their leaves are curled sideways. They have bumps on their stems. It's like they should be saying "yeettthhh, mathter..."

Their leaves look dented; the upper sides are dented in and you can see them denting out on the undersides. Some of the bulbous stem seems to eventually turn into the scabby thing shown below and not be bulbous any more.

Some of the leaves are fine, others are dented, even on the same plant.

These tomatoes even grow in the same pot, one is a happy tomato and one is an Igor tomato!

Here you can see what the dents look like on each leaf side.

Does anyone know what has caused this to happen or what to do about it? The plants are kept on the same windowsill, both healthier and Igor-looking ones. Touch wood, the condition does not seem to be affecting any of my other plants. It's like a weird genetic mutation.

Eek. I don't don't see any greenfly though; last time my tomatoes had greenfly I could visually see the things (ages ago, different tomatoes, different house). Can you get really small ones that are hard to see or are they inside somehow?

Could be wrong, but I think I can see some in Pic no 1.
Give them an aerosol spray just for good measure, I'm almost sure its pest damage.

I agree with Pete, looks like greenfly damage.

I'm going to buy some bug spray and give them a squirt. it's just strange that try as I might I can't see anything (I think the thing that might look like greenfly in the pic is the weird bulbous stem and leaf blips), and my other type of tomatoes seem fine. Still, I'll let you know how I get on with the bug spray :gnthb: Anyone know how long until I might see an improvement in the plants once I start applying bug killer?

One spray should sort it, you would only see improvement in any new growth after the spray, if it works.

I've given most of my tomatoes a squirt with the spray today, even healthy-looking ones; the shop only had concentrate in stock so even though I made a tiny amount I still had some leftover. I got stuff that kills greenfly, whitefly, and other bugs including ones you can't see easily to try and cover all bases.

I did look at organic bug spray but it only said outdoor plants so I gave it a miss. I'm guessing it's smelly or something for it to not mention indoor plants? I'm not that familiar with organic.

Now just to wait and see what happens!

Aw. I sprayed them and it seemed to halt most of the weirdness from spreading, maybe not all. I have two of the supermarket-seed tomato plants left. The two plants seemed to be recovering, I repotted the largest one ... then a few days after when I got home from work, the it had suddenly gone from recovering, to having those bumps ALL OVER the leaves, apart from the very youngest ones! I've sprayed them both again, it's not looking too good but it wants to survive. It was just getting flower buds ready :( I hope it survives!

The other, smaller one didn't get this reoccuring problem :skp: It still has a few dots on the leaves but not as bumpy and it didn't come back and take over the plant. It lives in a different room, and I even started growing some other, different seedlings in the same pot with it because I thought it was going to fade away, but touch wood it hasn't.

I wonder what caused the larger plant to suddenly get really bad, and I wonder why the other one didn't; were there bugs in the repotting soil? Did I miss some whilst spraying? Did the other seedlings in the smaller tomato's pot help in some way? It's still a mystery :cnfs: It's still amazing to me how fast the problem can resurface.

Day 80, I am fighting a losing battle with an invisible enemy :( The bumps shrivel up after appearing, leaving dried leaf in their wake, then cause the whole leaf to shrivel up and die. It has consumed most of the leaves; as soon as the baby leaves reach a certain size they too get "bumps". The one set of tiny flower buds have not increased in size. I have sprayed, and sprayed, and emptied bug killer into the soil in the pot itself in an effort to stop whatever it is, but this has been unsuccessful. I have noticed some other plants having mites in the soil but this pot has nothing, absolutely nothing and all the pots in that room are mite free. I may have to kill the plant off and never know what caused the problem...

The slightly smaller tomato has bigger leaves, but it also has some bumps. It has no flower buds at all. I might keep it for now.

Any last ditch effort ideas before they go into the big greenhouse in the sky?
