The genus is easy (I think) but the species a little harder.
      Here goes.............
      Oxalis corniculata

longk and Silver Surfer are correct with Oxalis :blue thumb: but I'm not sure of the sub-species.

I photographed them two weeks ago in Eastern Turkey where the night time temperatures were sub-zero! The particular spot that these were in was in a very sheltered flowerbed in full sun during the day.

All references I have looked at say the flowers grow to a height of 4"-5" and that the plant doesn't flower in the winter. These flowers were a good 9" high.

I'm with Silver surfer on O pes caprae, only from likelihood. That's the one that has invaded lots of vineyards etc in Greece and Turkey and is everywhere.....
Hmmm, sorry seeing your other comments shiney I'm not sure, need to dig deeper :loll:

I guess that they were flourishing at this time of the year because of their sheltered position.

This was nearby in the wild, taken after the night time temperature had dropped to -6C

Thanks, Silver surfer :blue thumb:. Some good info there.

I didn't look any closer at the detail as I was more interested in playing with the cat that was in the flower bed! :noidea:

I agree with Oxalis pes-caprae. The Algarve is covered in a yellow blanket at the moment covered by this pretty but invasive wildflower. I have had some double booms which are very uncommon and they can get very tall searching for light. It freely self seeds which turn into tiny bulbs. We call them 'bulbs from Africa' as that is how they arrived here. :spinning: It actually looks quite pretty at the moment mingling with the 'Algarvian snow' ... pink and white Almond blossom.
