So I have a tree trunk in my garden it's nothing amazing, it will be the last thing on my list to do in the garden, probably next summer, but I saw these and they've inspired me, (I'm slightly addicted to Pinterest)

So some of the ideas are a little wacky but I love them,

Have you any of you guys and girls thought of or actually done this?

Your trunk isn't actually dead though :) Looks like it is suckering from the base - perhaps a Lilac? if so it will have nice flowers in the spring. Its also a thin trunk (combination of several stems) so won't offer as much support as a full tree trunk, and (if/when dead) will individually rot faster than a thick trunk.

I'd wait to see what the flowers look like next Spring. I suspect its been cut back because it is a thug, but you can do that every 5 years or so and enjoy the flowers / foliage for the 4 years between major pruning sessions :)

I'd put my money on it being a lilac too. Why not let it grow back? Also like Kristen says it's multi stemmed so won't give you the effect you are after.

Also if you really want one of those fairy houses you could always buy an old tree stump from a tree surgeon or local nature park (don't go there with a chainsaw or anything like that, I mean they usually have a lot of logs/stumps knock around that they don't want). With a bought in log you can pretty much guarantee it's dead (unless it's willow) and put it where ever you want to too.

I should really look into the fairy door market myself. Seems to be quite popular at the moment.
