I really do not know what to make of the RNLI
It is a much needed service and should be paid for and supported by the Government
Only the last words sum it up Boys Toys

The only dangerous sport that is paid for by the public in full, anyone else wanting to feel the adrenaline rush has to pay out thousands from their own pocket

The RNLI is denying people a good wage from a neccessity that would otherwise have to be funded in full by the Government,

They pay for the RAF to rescue idiots from mountains, then they should pay in full to rescue seafarers from the sea, But as long as someone wants to do it as a sport they sit back and let the people pay for the equipment and let un insured PEOPLE take the risk

Lots of people would love to have an adreneline rush risk sport but can not afford it, They can not join the RNLI as it is a closed brotherhood of men, Admittedly braver than I, but what about sky divers, etc

I am also of the belief that if you climb mountains or go to sea, then you should pay for the rescue if it needs to be carried out, INSURANCE

Jack if the RNLI was funded by the government, it probably wouldn't function as well as it does now. By now, with the country's present financial situation, they would be shutting down the service bit by bit all round Britain.

It has existed this long without government support and it's obviously working. Living on this island surrounded by the Irish Sea, I'm very aware of how necessary it is for the Institution to operate at full strength and I support them. By the way, did you know the RNLI was founded here on Mann. :)

I saw the R.N.L.I. were in attendance at the Serpentine for those swimmers who like to swim through duck extrement and dog snot.

        Cheers, Tony.

A few weeks back I got chatting to a very nice old chap at a local museum, where I'd chanced upon Redcar's old lifeboat, the Sir James Knott.

He was saying that before old age got the better of him, he was in the merchant navy for most of his life, and was a crew member for the RNLI when he wasn't at work. After leaving the merchant navy, he got involved with the RNLI full time, although in a less active role.

He was telling me that over the history of the RNLI, there had been one or two occasions when there was talk of making it a state funded service, but the RNLI had deliberately resisted. The reason being that as they were independent, it meant that ALL of the money they raised went straight to the front line of making sure they had the kit and the training and the people needed to save lives at sea. Not just actually going out and retrieving people, but also by using publicity and education to stop people from getting into a situation where they need to be rescued in the first place. Whereas if they were state funded, then most of the money would go straight to a massive chain of auditors and whatever was left would get shared out between many layers of managers, before the loose change finally made it down to the shop floor to enable them to buy a small fleet of child's inflatables.

I have to say, I spent a decade of my career working on a government contract, and I was laughing with the chap as he said all this, because I've seen it all for myself how government spending works.
