Near the end of my working life I found myself working for a local firm making aluminum framed windows [they were in vogue then] and got to know the salesman and foreman fabricator quite well. Then some years later the latter decided to launch out on his own and did so well the salesman decided to join him and today they have thriving business employing over a dozen people. What's that got to do with a thread on a gardening forum you might ask. Well! for anyone residing in the north of England who might be - like me- a J.O.A.T.M.O.N. (jack of all trades master of none) this might just interest you. I hit on the idea of constructing a wooden framed greenhouse [using second hand wood of course] and approached the fabricator mentioned above with a view to maybe scrounging some second hand glass but he supplied new very reasonable so I went with that. In the yard of the business was a pile of plastic window frames and doors that they had renewed which I was told were to be (sent to China for recycling) but I was welcome to help myself to anything thought useful. Being a scrounger of the first order & never likely to turn down such an offer I made numerous trips and gathered more than enough plastic frames and perspex sheets. As chance would have it all the sections of a conservatory were to hand so I grabbed enough for my project. From the surplus frames I improvised and made -rot proof- frames for the raspberry plot and window frames to cover the cold frame. Latest; I saw some secondary glazing aluminum units so grabbed enough to replace the plastic ones seeing they came with glass. Total cost [TIME] but being retired I have plenty of that. If anyone near to DL30HD could put such surplus waste to good use, a PM may be the first step. Cheers Dave.

Thanks for the appreciation /feedback.........may I say just how grateful I am to have an allotment right on the doorstep, (it could not be closer) it will be seen from the pics that it is just over our back garden fence beyond which is a playing field. So, despite living in a town of over 100,000 the view from the rear of the house is just like being in the country. [So Blessed] Incidentally, the previous attempt at a home made green house (using second hand timber and free polythene sheeting) was -I thought- adequate until an unusual fall of heavy snow the weight of which demolished it. Knocked the grin off my face for sure. Cheers Dave. 1.jpg 2.jpg
