In a planter - should I cut holes above the drainage hole?

    Hi

    My planters have 3 holes in them across the bottom, and I have lined each with compost bags that I have cut slits in. Now the planters have been filled, I am wondering should I then cut a slit in the bag directly above the drainage hole as well, or will soil start falling out if I do?

    It is usual to put coarse material at the bottom of the planter to help with drainage
    Crocks - broken clay/ceramic pots is favourite, I usually put Bark or similar as well before adding the compost
    Make your plastic holes plenty big enough - good drainage is essential in planters

      Winter planters need all the drainage they can get, summer ones can have a bit of a reservoir of water in the bottom.

        I use broken up polystyrene in the bottom of planters and big pots to aid drainage and in order to aid water retention in summer I mix in water retention granules with the compost.
