Does anyone know why the Indian bean tree sometimes has an abundance of ' bean pods ' and sometimes they are bare. Is it male/female I wonder, or simply flowering once every few years?

    Many Thanks /Alan.rawlinson

Catalpa bignoniodies, the Indian Bean Tree.

It has both male and female flower parts on all trees, so it's not that!.... They originate from the South-east USA where they have hotter summers, (Even Than Corrnwall. ) so it's more to do with the weather conditions in any given year.

    Yes. I agree.
I have observed one for some 30 plus years and it appears to be up to nature as to how it will perform over the growing season.

Many thanks for those useful answers - much appreciated. At least I know that there are both male and female parts on the same tree...

However, I walked by ( under) 2 bean trees in the lovely park in King's Lynn, Norfolk, last week, and one was loaded with beans and the other was barren.

Could it perhaps be to do with maturity?
