    Hello,

I was wondering if someone could give me some advice on what vegetables it would and would not be wise to plant if I don't have much/any space outdoors.

I recently planted a variety chilly pack which is just starting to sprout and I seem to have got the bug for planting stuff. Ideally I'd like to plant a sweet pepper plant of some description and also a bean/pea plant. I'm currently living somewhere with plenty of window ledge space and a back garden, but come July I'm moving to a first floor flat without a garden and limited window ledge space.

As far as I can tell the chillis should be fine but I'd love to have a small bell pepper plant somewhere that could remain on a window ledge. I have limited hope for beans/peas though based on my space, but advice there would be greatly appreciated too.

    Many thanks
    Mungo

I'm afraid not, that would be ideal.

Beans and peas are really for outdoors and I think you would struggle with them but you could grow some pea shoots.
Plant the peas shoulder to shoulder in a pot that can go on the window ledge. When the shoots are about 4" high you can cut them and eat them - raw or stir fried. They taste like fresh peas and they will shoot about 3 times before giving up, when you just plant some new peas.
Chillies and peppers will do well on the window ledge. You can plant seeds from a shop bought pepper.
You could try some tomatoes if you have enough window space. You don't have to let them get too big. Stop the plant (by taking its head off) after the first truss (bunch) of flowers.
You could also grow spring onions , salad leaves, parsley and other herbs.
I'm sure you'll get some other suggestions.
    Good luck with the project.

Depending on just how much window ledge space you have, for beans, how about Dwarf French beans. They only grow about 2 ft tall.

For tomatoes, how about going for a bush vareity rather than a vine one, then again you don't need to worry about the height.

Your peas will not do well indoors, French beans you might get away with. A better choice would be a mini tomato plant - Tumbling Tom would do well I'm sure.

I went and bought two little sprouting bell pepper plants "bellboy", some compost and some liquid plant food. I might have a go at some dwarf french beans later today.

I thought about tomatoes, but I use so many in cooking that having a single plant feels like a bit of a drop in the ocean.

Anyway, thanks for all your advice, it's greatly appreciated. I'll let you know how I get on. :runhills:

Before you give up on toms completely, have a look at this:

    http://www.dobies.co.uk/Shop/Vegeta...nds tomatoes&gclid=CP2Eo5DE9qcCFQoY4QodaQ-Ubg

They're meant for hanging baskets though, but I'm sure with a bit of ingenuity you could easily sort them somewhere to live.
