I have 2 cherry trees and need to spray them against caterpillars but how can you apply an insecticide when the tree is beyond the reach of my 5' stepladders ?

The back garden is always under caterpillar attack (year round) and Provado is the only thing that eradicates them, i can treat everything below a 7-8' level but the things above that are being demolished, just like everything else used to be before i started taking action a couple of years ago.
I used to just let nature be but i can't anymore because plants are being stunted and destroyed.
I can see it happening but can't do anything about it ..... is there an equally (or more) effective chemical that can be watered onto the soil ?
I'm guessing not or i'd be doing it already.
How do other people control this ?

i recently used a backpack sprayer that you pump pressure with a lever attached to the side, and used it for weeds

perhaps you can find an insectiside that is in powder form and gets mixed with water

not sure how tall your trees are, but can say that the pressure/spread was large and could possibly be used with trees up to 6m tall (I'm guessing so don't take it as gospel)

needs to be used when there is no wind

    Hi Louise

What type of catipilar, I never bother cant you put up some bird feeders to encourage the birds in and its a weird time to spray as the leaves will be falling off soon and have already started , plus with you spraying all over the place you will take out all the good insects as well , have you thought about putting a grease band round the trunk ? you most probably do already collect all the leaves up and burn them not that I like that either .

Why are you getting so many thats what I would be checking out are they ornamental or eating variety of cherry??

With Provado its absorbed into the plant so Iam surprised it doesnt work all over the tree

I don't know why that garden is so plagued but if i don't spray fairly regularly the plants suffer very badly, the leaves are eaten and torn, knitted and stuck together and it eventually affects the entire shrub or tree.

For the first 2 years i just left nature to get on with it but the infestations are just too bad here and i wasn't prepared to accept it any longer.
Provado is an excellent product and with just a few applications through the year the problem's been controlled well but these trees (about 15' tall) aren't able to have enough coverage - i do what i can reach on the stepladder but it's not enough.

Re: bird feeders ..... i have 8 out there !!!

My garden was plaged by liitle green ones they would do the same about two years ago , a tiny moth I think , funny you mention it as I have had them dangling from silk threads off the branches over the weekend but hardly any this year .

I wonder if its where we live ???

I've never had the problem in the front garden, ever, but the back is absolutely rife and if i don't keep ontop of it i end up with plants that aren't recognisable.

    It's a big problem here.
Since i was told about Provado, by a grower, i've not looked back - you need to stop the production/growth cycle and it's difficult to do and maintain.
