Insects - friend or foe

    Whilst mowing the lawn in the hot sun today (at last), lots of flying insects lifted up around the mower as I worked. They looked like something out of a swamp (sort of giant gnat).

    Must admit I don't know what they are for sure but the question is are they a gardeners friend or foe, in other words of course, will they eat aphids? ;)

    Perhaps just give me a nasty bite! :(

    P.S. What makes you think I live in a town? :D :D

    As far as I'm concerned, definitely foe!! They always bite me too! I don't care if they eat aphids, they eat me, and I don't like it! Seriously though, I don't know if they're helpful - must look it up! ;)

    Gnats, mozzies and midges only eat BLOOD!
