    Hi All,

Woke up yesterday morning to about 20 wasp like insects hovering over my lawn which I tilled recently so it's bare with no grass. This morning there's over 50!! Not sure what they are but they do look like wasps but alot smaller and red/brownish in colour.

Any help or advice on what they are and how to get rid of them would be much appericated!

Why do you want to get rid of them? They are unlikely to be harmful to humans and as you will probably be replacing the lawn with either a new lawn or something else, I doubt if they'll be there next year.

Fair point but I'm trying to get the lawn levelled by the end of this week as I only have the skip for a limited amount of time and I'm worried if I go out that I'll be stinged or worse swarmed by all of them! Especially if they are wasps.

Unless they are the traditional black and yellow beasties, you are unlikely to be stung. Wasps generally don't hang round in groups over newly tilled ground. They could be hoverflies which rely on looking like wasps and bees for defence (protective mimicry). Hoverflies are definitely harmless.

You're probably right mate, will see how it goes and hopefully I don't get stung! Thanks for the help.

Could it be a species of bee.
Probably been disturbed by all the tilling going on

Thanks all for your responses! There was just too many of them so I started work on the front lawn instead! Will check again tomorrow and work up the courage to work alongside them. :heehee:

Perhaps, but they definitely weren't that big! The plan for tomorrow is to hopefully finish off levelling and remove the rubble and rocks in the ground.

Also, will try to get a picture but by the time I've taken it they've moved out of frame.
