I've had an interesting couple of phone calls lately - people telling me that my computer is infected with all sorts of evil stuff and if I will just click on things and tell them what I find, they will show me and then show me how to get rid of it.

    Anyone else had the same?

Not satisfied with spam emails and junk mail, we're now getting hit by spam telephone calls!!!!

When I asked today's caller how much it was going to cost me, she hung up! Obviously looking for bigger suckers than me!
    :hehe:

I love these calls, try to string them along. When they start talking about the registry, say "what's that?". Then they start saying where it is, I drop the bombshell by saying "I haven't got one, I use Ubuntu/Linux". Quick hang up.

I recently had an email supposedly from the Inland Revenue saying "You are entitled to £956 refund which is tax you have overpaid. Please click on the link below so we can start the process to repay you. We will need your bank account details"!

Yeah, right! I might have been born in the night but I wasn't born last night!

Yes, I get the nuisance phone calls - most of them of the recorded message variety.
    They tend to be
Get rid of all your debts - I have none.
Thousands of people die without a valid will - I have one.
Would you like unlimited free calls - I have what I want
And more recently, my computer is sending out infected messages all over the place.
This was from a lady with an Asian accent. When I told her "TRIPE" she hung up !
I'm not sure she would have known what tripe was but it did the job.
I'm registered with the TSP but it doesn't seem to make any difference. Most of these calls are international.

Seem to be pretty widespread then

I had one a couple of days ago too. Asian Accent, very noisy call room - and called Sam!

I sometimes will string along but was busy so I just hung up.

I'm glad I've found out they are so widespread though - I must warn my Mum. We are registered not to receive unsolicited alls but more and more are coming through again.

Want a tip..... when it rings pick it up and say hi... and listen for 2 secs. If you hear nothing.. hang up.
    Why?
Any human on the other end will speak in that time and chances are they did dial your number.
If there is no answer....chances are its an auto serch PC programme has found your number and the 2 seconds is the time (approx) for it to connect and alert a human at the other end.
If you happen to hang up on somebody you know... well. they can always back !

One suggestion I heard was to say "Just a minute I'll be right back and put your phone down, just leave it and go about what you were doing.

But it is fun to string them along. Have not got a good sales call in a while. Oh, there was one that asked me if I had smoke alarms, I said "none of your business" they hung up.

The 'your pc may be infected/running slow scam' is worldwide. we have had it, the hook is (in our ones) the claim to be from Microsoft therefore sounding ligitimate. They haven't got my number! It's just another irritating cold call which as it is outside the UK even 'Personal Preference' can't stop so immediately you know it's a scam and tell them to fool someone else.

Yes, I know how to get the nuisances off my phone once I have answered it to them, but how do I stop them interrupting my lunch, getting me out of the bathroom wrapped in a towel, wasting my favorite TV programme or whatever.
    The TPR doesn't work.
I could ignore my phone all together but I have it for my convenience and so that the people I need to speak to can get through.
I just want to get rid of the nuisances !

    Simple Alice.
When you cant, or dont want to, dont answer it.
If its a freind or family they will ring back.
Its there for your conveniance not theirs.
You need the will power to do it.

I was on the bus the other day and a lady sat beside and first thing she did was whip out the Iphone, punch a few buttons and say
    "I`m on the bus"
    Then hang up.. Wow.
Both myself and OH have mobiles but they are never swithed on unless we want them to be to contact each other and to use as an emergency.. Thats it.. simple.

Can I get down off this box now????:):)

I have great fun with these sort of calls and try to see how long I can keep them talking.

The average is about 5 or 6 minutes but can occasionally stretch it to over 10 minutes. It's fairly easy to keep them on for a while by sounding really interested (or worried - depending on why they say they have phoned) and I keep asking questions without giving any proper answers to their questions.

Then there are the ones (not from abroad) that are 'only' doing a survey. Once again I sound very interested and friendly. I usually start by asking them how they got my number. Then progress to asking what the purpose of the survey is and end up by asking how much they are going to pay me.

It then goes something like this:-

    'Oh... We don't pay anything.'

    'Sorry, I don't understand!'

We don't pay anything because it is only a survey.'

'Ahh... you're doing it on behalf of some organisation.'

    'Yes.'

    'What organisation is that?'

(They then normally give me the name of some official sounding organisation)

'That's interesting. What are they going to do with the information from the survey?'

'They use it to help people.'

'Wow! That's brilliant. So how much do you pay?'

    'We don't pay anything.'

'I'm not sure I understand. You want information from me?'

    'Yes.'

'It's information you don't already have?'

    'Yes'

'So I'm supposed to give you information that you don't have but I do.'

    'Yes.'

    'Surely you pay for that?'

    'No.'

'But I have always been paid for my knowledge. That's how I earn my living.'

It's usually around this time that they hang up. :hehe: :hehe: :rotfl: :rotfl:
