Some might say I'm a bit unconventional. Well, they might not, but I do.

Anyway, hows about this. While most people work to keep weeds out, I've actually been collecting weed seeds and have started to put them on some bare soil in my back garden.:ouch1:

There is method in my madness though. One side of one section of my back garden is 'wild themed'. There is a mound of earth providing cover between the side door of the will network and the fort/tree house thing. That mound of bare earth will soon, I hope, be covered in a mix of grass and orange and purple wild flowers. I've just chucked in seeds from orange poppies and birdsfoot trefoil. Somewhere I have some purple toadflax/loosestrife seeds (always get mixed up, the one that comes up like a waggy dogs tail before it produces a purple spike of flowers). I'm also not going to take any action against any weeds that put themselves there, unless they are harmful, pain inflicting or particularly invasive, so dandelions, clover, buttercups etc can stay, thistles, nettles and euphorbia can go.

What do we reckon? Am I a glutton for punishment?

You're a bit unconventional Clue :snork:

Oh, I was meant to pass something on to you but I think I forgot:doh:

Trouble is, there is no access to my back garden from any road, except through the house, or unless I can get the church next door to let me use their gated alley and then lift stuff over the fence.

Much easier would be plastic pip if I can source a section of suitable length and bore, but when you're an individual, nobody seems to want to sell you it unfortunately. I'll keep looking though.

Oh, and thank @Loli for the good suggestion:)

You could try putting a wanted on Freecycle for some offcuts, be specific though or you could end up being offered allsorts.

I'd be well up for what you're doing Clue and I'd class all the plants you have listed as wild.

Dandelions are sacred in our house unfortunately. When I dig them out of the borders/beds I have to do so when my son isn't looking because they're his favourite flower. This stems from when we first moved in and nothing would grow. The only flowers we had were a few dandelions.:)

we've a number of wildflower/weeds in the garden that are welcome & encouraged but they have to stay where i want them, them's the rules:nonofinger: the exception is the dog-violets which we actually dug up & brought home a couple of years ago, im quite happy for them to self seed themselves around the place cos they're so pretty lookin'

I love forget me nots, but am struggling to encourage them in my garden.

My garden is full of weeds, most of them I just leave, with the exception of some which I know will explode in population, like Dandelion, Bramble, Creeping Buttercup and some other annoying weed I can't identify at the moment. Any plant (that is intended to be there) that seeds itself, I just leave and don't pull up as well.

If you want a wild look then you need to let nature take it course, but at the same time be quite firm with several weeds.

I grow dandelions in a nice container. They are pretty plants and the guinea pig appreciates our effort very much. Young leaves can also be used in salads, they taste a bit like rocket.

(OK, I admit I don't actually use the leaves in salads myself, but growing them for the purpose makes me sound quite cool and foodie-like I think  )
