Hi, We bought a house last June which comes with a garden. Since I have little practical experience I thought it would be best to join a forum and find out about such things. Since then I have been involved in pruning the forsythia (badly needed) cutting down a fence-full of ivy (gaining brownie points from the neighbour in doing so, which is also useful) and staining the decking/wood, which I left till too late and is only partly done. I'd like to have a wild flower garden which is attractive to birds and bees (I have contact numbers and web addresses for suppliers - I'm not taking these out of the wild) but realise I have a lot of reading to do and knowledge to gain.

" Since then I have been involved in pruning the forsythia (badly needed)"

Don't panic if you get little / no flowers this coming Spring. Forsythia flowers on "last year's wood", which you have probably had to prune off, so you may not have any/much "last year's wood" left to carry flowers this coming Spring.

To keep it in shape prune such Spring flowering shrubs just after flowering, and then the new growth they subsequently create during the Summer will be the wood that carries flowers the following Spring.
