Gardeners Corner - meet Bonnie. 6 months old and the spitting image of one of his predecessors.

Beautiful coat, Bonnie! Has she just taken up residence with you, Fran? A bit like Rosa's Rosa!

Yup - collected today. I had two bitches before, but this time its a dog. He's a real poppet, and very responsive, so hopefully teaching him his manners will be easy peasy - mmmmmm, I won't tempt providence :D

Hi Fran, what a cutie, I have always said that I would get a King Charles when I'm too old and decrepid to have Dobes, probably just as strong willed but a little less of them.

Sorry, Fran, for the gender change ... I did see where you said "his" predecessors!

Just make sure you don't step on him, being a wee one and all that, as he could hide in your carpet! [IMG]

Rosa is indeed Rosa - Bonnie is also similar to one of my previous bitches - I like this colouring. Did think of getting a bigger dog this time, but in the end reverted to a breed that I know fits my life style well - including my motorcaravan - and I like the breed friendly and game. Can you imagine trying to make up a bed in a motorcaravan, with a large dog occupying the space :D :D

Your right Sue, they can be just as strong willed, but far easier to deal with.

Now if he just lets me have an undisturbed night - hopefully as he's used to overnighting alone, it will be fine.

Thanks all - so far it is going well. Collar on, lead tolerated, and first walk - Bonnie is as bright as a button and eager to please at the moment.

Liz I got Bonnie from the breeders who bred my previous dogs - miletreeuk.com. I used to board my cats with the wife who also bred cats and I liked her way with them, then she and her husband started breeding and showing cavs - and I liked the way they did that too, so thats where I got my first two bitches. They take their own dogs back as boarders - and my two had a ball if they had to stay messing around with the others - mind they needed a bath before they were picked up :D :D

Whilst there is a rescue for Cavs in Norfolk, they rarely appear at other shelters, and because of their nature, it can be the result of severe abuse- let alone bred badly by unscrupulous people. There are some potential serious genetic pitfalls with Cavs if the breeder is less than scrupulous

Yes, particularly with the heart problem. As they can be perfectly healthy until 5 or so it's very tempting for the owners to breed dogs who later prove to have problems.
My sister raises money for the cavalier charity Helping Hearts, and also has a website about these problems.
Hope Bonnie proves to be healthy and long lived. [IMG]
