Hi there folks. Just bought myself an electronic timer with a dripper system from B&Q. Hopefully, you know the kinda thing I mean :) Anyway, the plan is to set it up to water my tomatoes while I'm away on holiday. What I thought was to set it to water every day for an hour (in the morning). Obviously, I'll need to 'tune' it, but does that sound like a good place to start ? Cheers...freddy.

Because, if you water in the morning during the summer, most of the moisture will evaporite before the plants can take it up. This is not the case if you water in the cool of the evening.:gnthb:

Well ... I have to say that I've never subscribed to that theory!

    My theory:

Plants drink more during the day, and will be stressed if they didn't get a drink since the night before

Water applied during the day will, also, evaporate creating humidity (and lowering temperature by evaporative cooling in hot weather)

Plans which have cold-feet at night (i.e. from evening watering) are more prone to developing disease. (Nothing is going to get cold feet by being watered at night in the Summer, so this is only relevant for Spring/Autumn - and Winter of course)

But I'm open to being told I'm a bigger plonker than Rodney! (Only Fools and Horse gag - in case you haven't been out for a couple of decades!)
