I have recently bought a house and the garden needs some work, I don't have alot of time on my hands to maintain it though, and was suggested I try fake grass, but is astro turf better than real grass?

It depends on your point of view. You'll never have the smell of a freshly mown lawn, or see bumblebees seeking out the clover flowers, or blackbirds on the prowl looking for worms and slugs after the rain. But then you wont have to worry about cutting it, and feeding it etc.

I think Clueless has it right. It all depends on what you want it for.

Sorry Dai, not keen, it looks more like a green carpet to me. Give me a lawn with weeds anytime! :)

It depends what you want to use your garden for and how much money you've got. I looked into it for a patch of lawn where my son plays basketball and the grass never gets a chance to grow, but was put off by the price. It's not just the cost of buying it, it needs a lot of preparation, removing the old grass/weeds, and a proper sub-base putting down. It would be cheaper to put some grass seed down then pay someone to come and mow your lawn once a week I reckon. :dbgrtmb:

To be honest that's exactly what I think when I see a bowling green or a really preened bit of ornamental turf:o

I know very little about 'astro turf', but that which I have seen didn't actually look very much like a 'lawn'. OK, so what I saw may have been a cheap version (if such exists), but it wasn't anything approaching the dense, clipped Wimbledon centre court effect that I would have wanted had I spent the sort of money I was told it cost - in fact, the more I looked at it, the more I wanted to get my hands on a mower!

Of course, if you want to take inspiration from Chelsea, well, there's always the bright blue shag-pile carpet effect of which I caught a brief glimpse on one of the programmes :heehee:

It's really more suited to a smaller area as the overall effect in large spaces is a bit too, well fake I suppose [didn't think that comment through properly!]

My cousin in Oz had it done as his central Sydney house has a large tree overhanging and fake grass was the only answer. It actually looks great, but in larger areas definitely not.

You can do a quick search online and get some free samples sent to you to give you a better idea of what's available.

Looks rubbish IMHO, someone local has had it done and it looks faded already ! better off with proper hard laid gravel and a few no-maintenance plants :)

        Hi,

I actually have fake grass in my front garden, much like you I don't have a lot of free time for gardening so it suits me down to the ground! I used a company called Everlawn, they sent me through a free sample, and gave me plenty of useful tips! Plus they deliver your artificial grass in large rolls anywhere in the UK and even offer an installation service!

I also used Everlawn and they come and installed it for me at a great price, artificial grass is better if you dont have the time.
