Is it a fern or just a really big weed?

    Hi

I posted here a couple of years ago when I was a gardenless gardener. Well, we've moved now and I have a west facing garden :), there aren't that many plants it in but just recently this one seems to have put on a spurt and I really have no idea what it is.

I did think it could be a fern but it is in the sunniest area of the garden, currently getting sun from mid-morning to late afternoon.

Hope the photos are OK - I left it a bit late in the day to take them but in my defence was busy with the lawn this morning and watching rugby this afternoon.

    Thanks for any help.

    Chi

Looks like Oriental poppy (Papaver orientale) but that's only a quick guess maybe someone else can confirm

I too was thinking oriental poppy but wasn't sure enough to say. If it is that then it's most definitely worth keeping.

Aesculus and clueless - thank you! There were some poppy heads around it but I assumed they were just a completely different plant

Miraflores - thanks too, that's what made me think it couldn't be a fern as evenwith my scant knowledge I know ferns like shade, but wondered if the previous owners had just shoved it in before they moved. :)

Thanks! Been looking at photos and looking forward to seeing it in the flesh - or should that be in the flower - now.

If I remember right, it shouldn't be in flower for at least a couple more months yet. I think they are a midsummer flower.
