I had two dozen lovely cauliflower seedlings growing in the greenhouse, between four and six inches tall yesterday morning. Then, when I went up in the afternoon to check the plants, I was horrified to see that they'd all been nipped off, just leaving bare stalks. I thought at first that a rabbit had been in (the door was open), but the funny thing is, the leaves were all piled up at the side of the trays. I think I could see teethmarks in the stalks, so it might have been a mouse. Any other thoughts?

I reckon either a mouse or Field Vole.

Thanks Strongy. I've got the door shut now and the rooflights open so I'm hoping it won't get too hot. I'm also wondering if it's too late to start some more seeds or should I just buy some plants?

Would you believe it? The little blighter mus have been in the greenhouse all the time cos when I opened the door yesterday, all me broccoli plants were nipped off and the leaves eaten. Grr!

Now I'm leaving the door open and a watchful eye on the rest of my plants. (Had to buy cauliflower plants but am risking planting some more broccoli seeds and hoping for the best.

Boghopper it could be squeezing through the tiniest of gaps. In a past house of mine we had to cover all the air bricks with a metal mesh to stop the blighters getting in. :)

They say if you can push a biro through a hole a mouse can get in too. Dare I suggest a trap???????

Yes, a trap might be the answer. But... it will have to be a humane one. I think there's one lurking in the shed somewhere.

Meanwhile, the new cauliflower plants I had to buy are elsewhere and I think I'll risk planting them out. Plus I've put some more broccoli seeds in and hope it's not too late.

Weather being as it is there really isn't a need for a mouse to take up residence is there? I know in the winter we all want food and shelter on hand but it doesn't need your greenhouse does it? Hope you catch it (them?), may have to take it a long way off though to stop it popping straight back.

There was a Vole behind the loo this morning, left a tiny gap in the floorboards behind the outlet.

They will get in anywhere won't they? Joys of nature, a bit like weeds really - fine when they're in the right place
