    image.jpg image.jpg image.jpg Hi,
We laid our selves a new lawn back in May and there's a couple of patches around the borders where the grass is very dry and IMO dead.
We did our best to keep it moist and was hoping it would come through eventually but nothing...
So is it dead or not?
If it's dead like I believe, is it just a case of re-seeding? (I am going to be over seeding it anyway for it to come back much thicker next year)
Also when is the best time to seed, September?

    Liam

I would rake the dead/dry grass out and re-seed. Also water it vigorously. As they say, grass is tough and might revive itself when you least expect. Good luck with that.

Yes, it does look dead in those areas. Is there an underlying reason for it, perhaps the soil depth being shallow there?

      Plenty of soil depth
I think it must of just been how I laid it as its only in certain areas around the border and when I did my research it said the edges are at Rick of drying out.
      Would you seed it now?
How soon after laying a new lawn wou you over seed as I'm doing a similar thing in the front garden

Yes, you can re-seed it now but I wouldn't do it over the existing dead patches as they are right on the edge of the lawn, the soil there will now be useless, nutrients having gone. Dig the patches out and replace with a mixture of soil and compost, approximately one third compost two thirds soil. The compost will help to stop it drying out so quickly. Firm it down then sprinkle the seed and then cover with a thin layer of soil, this will stop the wind or birds taking the seed. Don't forget to keep the areas watered for the rest of the summer.

Alternatively you could dig a few turves from another area of the lawn to use there and then patch the lawn where you've taken them from. Sometimes it's easier when you have an awkward area to deal with.

It's up to you when you over seed but it would be easier to do it late summer when there's less need to keep it watered. :)
