    Leylandi - tidy up

    Privet - cut the hedge

    Hebe - prune

    Climbing roses - cut back

    Thanks, Nick

Leylandii and privet you can certainly cut now.

Fter years of struggling to cut my privet twice a year, this year I've taken to giving it a quick trim every couple of weeks. It has responded really well and is growing into a dense nicely shaped hedge finally and I'm pretty sure Leylandii is the same. Needs butting back regularly anyway to stop it getting totally out of control.

The other two would. I think, survive ok but spring may be better. Someone with more knowledge and experience will be able to give a better answer I'm sure

You can cut back the roses if you wish now, but I would do it in Winter when the rose is totally dormant. The Hebe-I would do in spring or if it is squashing something next to it now-then now.

They are massive (c7m) and climb up the side of my house, almost touching the roof - so I guess they must be very old. I'll take your sound advice and prune in March.

    Thanks, Nick

Re the hebe, Dont prune now, it will produce new shoots that will be vulnerable to the frosts. Leave it till late next spting (asuming this is a heavy prune)

    Everything else as advised.

I agree with Pro re the Hebe, I always cut mine right back in march and it gets bigger every year, it's only just stopped flowering a few weeks ago, hope this helps. :)

Light trimming of the Hebe to get rid of the old flower heads should be ok

Would it be OK to cut a Privet back really hard at this time? Like I mean reducing a 16' by 6' hedge to about 8' by 4':cnfs:
It would only leave bare, brown growth. Would it grow OK next Spring:help:

Caj, if its reducing the height then yes but if your talking a hard cut of the side then id leave it till spring if nothing else on aesthetic grounds.

In theory the ideal time for the reduction (per sae) would be in spring when the sap is rising but if needs must then id go ahead with it.
