    Hello,

I moved into my house 2.5 years ago and amongst a number of conifers was a tree with red leaves and the following spring we had the most amazing display of pink flowers. Since then I've cleared away the conifers and progressively the tree has looked worse and worse each year and the amount of flowers has reduced, the tree has lots of dead branches and the leaves are now starting to wilt.

Here is a pic from this Spring from a good branch, which was well populated with flowers. I thought his may help identify what type of tree it is?

Here are two current pictures, one showing the scraggly bare tree with lots of dead branches and another showing how the leaves are wilting across the whole tree.

Is there anything I can do to help it recover?

    Thanks, Nick

Did it flower in Spring originally and then in Autumn? or does it just flower in Spring?

Looks like a Cherry, although the growth is a bit "upright". Cherry are prone to canker :(

There was another thread on this just the other day which you might find with a search :)

Thanks Kristen - sorry my post should have read "Here is a pic from this Spring from a good branch, which was well populated with flowers. I thought his may help identify what type of tree it is?"

I've now amended my post above.

I'll check out the search but I can't see any canker on the tree

Was it very wet last year? That might have upset it, and hopefully better weather will help it recover. Feeding it (with a general, balanced, fertiliser) will probably help too - don't overdo it though!

Looks like purple leafed plum (Prunus cerasifera) from the pics. How're the soil conditions? Has anything changed since you removed the conifers? (e.g. ground more waterlogged) It could be that in removing the conifers, which the Prunus has adapted to over time, you have changed the growing conditions. If this is the case, and it's not too severe, the tree should be able to weather this. If you haven't taken a look at this thread then you may find help there, or at least be able to provide us with further information to make a better assessment.
