I have almost total empathy with Dear Liza of 'There's a hole in my bucket' fame.
Almost, because I don't understand her patience :wallbanging:

Because he tries so hard and never succeeds.

Where to start: Philip Marlowe, Inspector Rebus, Sherlock Holmes, Salander (Girl with the Dragon Tattoo). In fact any character that is a social misfit, whilst being one of the good guys however marginally.
Never really understood empathy or seen the point of it.

Miss Read, who is sort-of fictional.
              I’m not a teacher though!

Dersu Uzala. I have seen the film dozens of times since I was a kid, and recently re-watched when it popped up in Amazon Prime.

I think part of the empathy stems from guilt. The film talks about us, the modern people, and about our big clumsy hands that spoil everything pure and good even when we mean well.

As a child I admired Dersu and tried to be him in our playtime in the woods (plenty of that back then, with less tigers though  ), as a young adult I felt truly sorry for him and now it's just empathy.

Anything kind and wise gets my vote in this world.

Mary Bennet in Pride & Predudice.

Edited to add the "why": Because she's plain, serious-minded, studious and somewhat introverted, and so society doesn't value her like it does her pretty and outgoing sisters, even the empty-headed ones. In many ways not a lot has changed.

                      Hercule Poirot.
Why? Because I'm always right, and there is no one more humble than myself!!

                        Albert Haddock.

He started me on five decades of very enjoyable argumentative or legal battles - leading to being a pain in the backside of businesses, local authorities and government departments - whilst helping myself and other people arrive at some modicum of justice. :heehee:
