Is there a way of growing flowers to face a particular direction?

My lawn is raised and it would look great to have a couple of rows of daffs along the edge of it, facing the house to watch while washing up. Can you grow them to face a certain way or is it pot luck?

Flowers tend to face the sun, nothing you can do about that.

"Flowers tend to face the sun"

Particularly Winter flowering bulbs when the sun is low in the sky.

I'd love to plant Daffs on the South side of our house, but no point as they will all be facing the other way and just "mooning" at me :( :hehe:

Grow them in pots then you can turn them away from the sun. I do that with roses in pots, I turn whichever side has the best blooms towards the house. If you plant in the shade, they usually face the direction of most light, so if you plant, say, close to a boundary wall instead of your house wall, then they should face your house. (if you try it and it doesn't work.. it was Kristen's idea :D )

You could try to shift the axis of the earth so that your house is always between the flowers and the sun:)

"if you try it and it doesn't work.. it was Kristen's idea"

    :hehe:

You know what? In all my years of gardening, and some large projects amongst that, I've never thought of changing the earth's obit to solve the problem of which way my flowers face. But I've been reading up on it, and apparently this very weekend is just the time for that particular project (some loo rolls and sticky-back plastic required, apparently), so I'm going to give it a go.

In the immortal words of that very gallant gentleman, Captain Oates,"I am just going outside and may be some time" :)

I'm putting in a plea on behalf of Prevention of to Cruelty to Daffs - keep turning their pots around and the poor little blighters'll get dizzy. I've heard of a twisted hazel but this is just unkind!

Kristen - I had been saving loo rolls for my god-daughter's play group, but I'm sure they'd be happy to go without for a higher purpose. Any idea how much sticky-back plastic we'll need?

PS - until she was about 6 my eldest daughter believed what my Father told her ... that the earth only spun because of car wheels driving it round!

Plant your Daffs in a drift, then some are sure to face your kitchen window.

After all this gifted knowledge of directional flowers I don't believe we will see the face of Paterson00 here again.

I think Paterson00 has been asking some excellent and thought provoking questions.

I don't suppose changing the rotation of the earth was an anticipated answer, but I'm fully expecting an extra pair of hands to help me over the weekend (You at the back, sit down and wipe the smirk off your face, you'll be sorry come Monday morning ...)

This forum is becoming more and more interesting... however, I strictly forbid you guys tampering with the planetal settings, my sister is doing a PhD in metheorology and your cheap tricks just might affect her results. Hands off!

And for the daff facing problem, why not just to shade them from behind. Easy, just plant a row of something, like Leylandii, behind them. All problems solved, silvousplait. [IMG]

And just to keep up the serious tone, I think the turnable pot idea is the best so far. At least you'll see the faces when you want.

She has experimental results in August? Shirley some mistake? Sept-June = "In Uni Bar", July-August = working on a farm earning enough to pay off Uni bar, eh?!!

Now if that won't change the rotation of the earth I don't know what will!!

All of my daffs currently face the right way. If Kristen goes ahead and changes the Earth's rotation so they face the wrong way, I shall get very cross! So I hereby inaugurate the Hands Off Our Earth's Rotation Organisation (HOOERO)!!!
