Hello Goji berry lovers ... can anyone tell me if this is a shrub as a neighbour said it was a fruit but didn't know what ...

I don't think it's Goji Berry Victoria. The leaves are the right shape but Goji leaves are more leathery. :)

Certainly not Willow, Pete, what are you looking at (ignoring the Carob behind it and the Oxalix pes-caprae under it ...)! It is about 1 meter tall at the moment. The neighbour is from Angola and not really familiar with 'oddities' shall we say but she definitely said it had small fruit.

Hmmm, Sheal, one friend has about 20 Goji plants and her leaves are not leathery ... must get her back to the river to look I guess.

Flowers when, or rather IF, they form are tiny. Stems are droopy. I'll try to post a photo of ours tomorrow. It's hard to judge, but the leaves on yours Vicky look a little too broad.

the leaves of the goji actually have a strange horrible grey/white green color .
mine look more of a climber then a bush....must have a picture somewhere.

there is mine (100% sure as I grown from a goji seed 5 years ago)

Sheal says leaves are more leathery, Sal's leaves don't look leathery at all to me!

Dave, I've not seen flowers as we only just bought the place a few months ago and I am relying on someone else who has seen the plant flower/fruit who doesn't know anything about it. It is also complicated by the fact I am attempting to carry on a conversation with this woman about a plant she knows nothing about in Portuguese ... :hate-shocked: Dave, we have had torrential rains of late (in fact a tornado on Friday) so maybe this has 'perked' things up after a drought winter/summer?

Sal, my friend's bushes are more climber like than shrub like (they have them against a chain-link fence) and this one I have is more 'straggly' shall we say ... and your leaves look broader there than mine now!

Maybe I shall have to wait till flowering / fruiting time ... whenever that may be here but the neighbour has seen it do both ...

Dave ... yours doesn't look like Sal's ... one is smaller/fatter, the other longer/thinner ... in the nicest possible way guys ... wash your mouth out with soap Vicky ... :heehee:

Actually, to be honest, Dave and Sal, your plants look completely different to me ... or is it just my eyesight?

Seriously speaking though, are there various varieties in different countries?

PS ... and neither of yours look like mine ... :dunno:

Sals flowers do look a bit bigger than the ones ours produces and the leaves on hers do look a bit more elongated. The few berries that ours has produced in the past were just the same as the ones we once bought in a heath food shop.

Dave, yours look very straggly like my friends 20 or so plants here, very unattractive but they are only growing them for the fruit.

Aha, and there Sal (who, by the way Dave is a male ... Salvatore, a lovely Italian member of the forum) even says his leaves are different than yours. And they certainly look different to me.

So, we do possibly have different varieties?

I've found two different species, Lycium chinense and Lycium barbarum.

Could explain the difference in appearance.
