Is this a rose?

If so, what kind? If not, what is it? The main trunk is quite thorny and the flowers look not dissimilar (although larger) to the flowers on a Wedding Day rose.

Looks rather odd and unwieldy. Is it meant to look like this, or is it perhaps something that was grown as a standard or something and has just got out of control - and if so, what would you do with it?

 

It's beautiful - a wild briar rose I think. I have some growing in my native hedge and they are unwieldly but worth it.

 

Thank you - and I agree, it is rather lovely. I've cleared most of this bed completely this spring so it's a bit lonesome without all the weeds that were formerly keeping it company...
