I have a few "wild" rose bushes on my property, all produce large pink flowers with only a few petals which smell lovely. The bushes are easily over six feet high.

The stems don't have the usual thorns, instead they have a "fuzzy fur" of very short, tiny spikes.

Afraid that I can't take any photos right now but does this sound like a type of wild rose?

If so, is it okay to lop them back now? Some are getting out of hand and extremely "leggy", but I don't want to cut them now if it might stunt their growth for next year. If I can lop them back to a foot or so now then so much the better.

    Rosa Rugosa

I would leave pruning until just before Spring when new growth begins to emerge, but I think @wiseowl would be able to steer you in the right direction for pruning.
