Can anyone tell me whether this is an Orange Tree as I was given it - and that was what I was told it was! The little flowers don't smell very orangey. It is about 8" high. Don't know how old it is.
    Thanks for any info. [IMG]

Doesn't look like an orange tree to me, Sunshine2, and I live in the middle of thousands of them.

The leaf is definitely not right for a Citrus sinensis (the common orange ... I won't even go into the rest). Nor what appears to be a blossom coming. A Philadelphus (Mock Orange) perhaps which smells of orange ... but not sure the leaf or blossom is right for that.

Someone else will have to come in here to assist ...

Flower looks like a potato family type, so could it be the "Christmas Orange" with small orange-like fruits grown as a pot plant for the Christmas trade? (I think its botanical name is Solanum capsicastrum.)

No, I don't think it's that, Hy, as I have had one outside for a couple of years ... again, the leaves are not right. Definitely NOT it ... just went out to have a look and mine is flowering and fruiting .... and something is eating it!

I am now thinking ... could it be an Eriobotrya japonica (the Loquat)? BM Babe ... is this what you just bought? The leaf looks similar but not sure about the flower.

When I got out in a bit, I'll examine closely the two on our lane and come back to this later in the day.

It doesn't look like an orange tree to me neither.
I haven't got one, but sometimes I have seen the leaves attached to the fruit itself and your leaves don't look like it.
As the leaves of an orange tree would be kind of hard and shiny and the lines on the leaf would not be so evident.

Don't think it's Loquat, LoL - the flowers on that are described as being in "broad, pyramidal panicles", and Loquat leaves are too deeply veined. There are several Solanums grown usually as annuals and known - so my books insist! - as "Christmas Cherries". And that flower's a dead ringer for Black Nightshade - Solanum nigrum....

Looking at the S nigrum, Hy, my book says stems are often blackish and the leaves are oval, lobed and stalked and are quite visible in my book. These leaves are not right.

No, Gogs, I don't believe it's S jasminoides 'album' as I have S jasminoides in the purple and the leaves are small and unveined.

I did some enquiries and the common opinion seems to be something to do with small peppers, chilly peppers, maybe even an ornamental chilly plant. They are pretty plants in any case!

To be honest, looking in the veg section of my book it actually looks like the S tuberosum ... the common potato! :D

No, I wasn't suggesting it was S. nigrum - it's just that the flower is the same as that! Most solanums have a similar flower. Bittersweet (S. dulcamara) has the same flower in a lovely purple - and others in the same family (spuds & tomatoes) do as well.

Could it be the t'other "Winter Cherry", S. pseudocapsicum???
