I had a large pot of dwarf bamboo for many years and decided to halve it in spring. Around the outside of one pot has grown several stems that are thicker, broader leaved and taller than then the original bamboo. I pulled a stem out and the roots are only about 5cm long. Please see picture - is this bamboo?

    Thanks in advance... CIMG1735.JPG CIMG1735.JPG CIMG1735.JPG

I think I can see 2 seed heads on it, so it looks like grass, not bamboo.
The leaves look like Reed Canary Grass but the seed heads are not, so it's some sort of grass similar to that.

:oopss: I didn't notice the seed heads and thought it was just a rogue growth. Yes, it does look like some crop ... do you have any crops fields nearby that seed could have blown your direction?

There is a bird feeder nearby - had a better look tonight -it certainly looks more grass like although the stems are very strong. When this first started growing the stem resembled that of a short bamboo cane your can buy for suporting plants. But i was suspicous as the roots were very small -whereas bamboo propergates beneath the ground.
    Thanks ..

Not bamboo it's a type of grass, and needs to be pulled out or it'll spread around your border etc.

Definately 2 different plants in the pot.
The original bamboo, and something else. Looks like some other cereal/grass.

Just to clarify ....cereal crops such as Wheat and Barley are still classed as grasses!
Just ones that over centuries man has selected for larger seed heads.

No point in taking further pic of the seed head until it is full formed and expanded.

Yes, it probably has arrived in bird food.
