These fruiting bodies have just appeared in my garden. Are they honey fungus - and if they are should I be worried...

Hi, I've never seen honey fungus toadstools myself, it does look similar, but it also looks like a lot of other toadstools. Have you any old dead wood nearby? Usually that's what it attacks. Why do you think it might be?
My father had it in a very old cornish garden and his fruit trees never thrived; the little trees just gradually died. Apparently it can spread quite rapidly, but there are varieties that will not attack new growth, only decaying wood. I have seen the black threadlike growths close beneath the surface, look for these as well. It is the right time of year for the toadstools, and yes, you should worry if it is the Honey fungus variety which will attack new growth. My Dad isolated the area of garden where it was by putting in plastic sheeting to a depth of about a foot- luckily it was asmall area.
Hope this isn't what you've got!

They are growing where an old apple tree used to be. Last year I cut it down and had the stump ground out. I have dug it over and didn't notice any black threads, so perhaps they aren't honey fungus. Fingers crossed.

A garden I work in has honey fungus as well and I've just discovered a possible control method using Early Purple Orchid (Orchis mascula).

    Webmesh: Honey Fungus

Anyone any experience or comments about this?
