Is this lemon balm?

Got massive clumps of it growing everywhere all of a sudden. Doesn't smell like lemon the leaves though...

 

Looks a bit like Creeping Jenny. May have blue flowers.

 

Looks like lemon balm to me. The leaves don't have much of a lemony smell at this time of year, the scent becomes stronger later on as they grow and conditions become drier.

 

Has it got a square section stem?

I'd say lemon balm as you can see the sticks of old stems poking out all over its obviously been either cut back or knocked down to the roots by frost and is regenerating

Lemon Balm I would agree too. Tough as old boots but easy to pull and grow where you want it (if you do). I like it, makes a nice shrubby filler.

I pick leaves when smelly, tie them in a handkerchief, crush them a bit to release the oils and put in the linen cupboard. I'm also one for picking anything with a nice smell (sage, rosemary etc) and rubbing against my shirt when I'm out gardening.

@shiney nice idea for a soothing bath, though will replace old tights with a piece of muslin.

I'm not a fan of it now, but my parents' garden is still blessed/cursed with clumps of it popping up all over, from when I had a lemon balm plant as a kid. Hoik each clump out and pot it up. Then flog them at a suitably middle class event with prominent signage promoting their relaxing properties. And don't let any remaining bits seed, else you'll have more trouble next year.

 

I say I was blessed with it personally. Anything that attracts bees into my garden is welcome with open arms.

 

I had a problem with lemon balm a few years ago it wanted to grow everywhere! But as long as you keep on top of it it's easy to keep under control, as you have rightly said the bees love it it can be a bit of a job digging it up, I had some beside my patio with a massive root on it, it took a while to dig up but I got there in the end

 

I would add "once you've got on top of it". Mature clumps spread by root runners too. So it can be rather invasive.

 

I'm just jealous of shiney's over 200ft garden!
