I have two ponds in my garden for wildlife so no fish, i want to make an island and make some shallow areas so was going to make the islands and shallow areas using sand bags I would need a couple of tons of media so not using pond soil to expensive and using sand instead. I think i would have to use lime free sand so would sand they use in children's sand pits be ok?

I would imagine it would be OK. Sounds like a good way of making an island. You could always put a tree fern on top as an imitation desert island palm; having its feet in the water would suit it no end.

A bit late to the thread but play sand is fine for ponds. I have used it in mine for putting around the shallow margins to protect the liner and to give the plants something to root into initially, before sediment has had time to accumulate. Cost about £90 for a builder's bag delivered.
