As reported in the paper today we're 'apparently' about to get a cold spell of some 3-4 weeks; lasting well in to February, with night time temps down to -15 and averaging -4, daytime temps are expected to average just above freezing. Freezing rain will arrive first followed by sleet and snow in some parts, especially the north and north east.

Bring it on, I like some nice frosty weather with a bit of snow :dancy::snork:

Which paper was it? The Express? Mail? Probably a slow news day. They're always looking for ways to make us feel bad, sells more papers.

What a shame... it is a beautiful day here and actually not too cold. It tricks the mind into thinking spring isn't too far away, but alas...

The report I read said it would get colder at the end of the week, but didn't go down as far as -15c.

An average minimum of -4C over a month would be catastrophic to our crops, and would rival January 1963.. so forgive me for being a little sceptical ;-)

Bare in mind the coldest winter in recorded British history (1683-84) has an average minimum of -5 to -6C, and then frost fairs were held on the Thames, the sea was frozen off the southeast coast to nearly 2 miles out.

It will be cold though for sure!

Just had a look at the BBC weather site for this area for the next 10 days - nightime temperatures down to -2C and daytime between +3C and +8C, so not too bad for January, but I expect it will get colder (as it generally does in these parts) in early February.

Absolutely Stephen I may have reported what I read but doesn't mean I believe it, no doubt there is colder weather coming but as has been said many papers get hold of it and think, lets make it better and it ends up sounding like a disaster movie :heehee:

During one of those 2 really cold winters of 2009 & 2010 I recorded about a week to 10 days of night time temps dropping below -5 every night as the longest spell of 'really' cold nights with the lowest at -17, but for that to last 3-4 weeks would be going some..:rolleyespink:

Don't worry, I wasn't holding you accountable, it's these papers, they have too much time on their hands! They love scaring British people.. but I think British people are getting sceptical of the papers, as if it were up to the papers we'd be digging our way out of snow all year around :snork:

2010 was indeed exceptional for recently times, but even 2010 was a mild day compared to some of the severe winters.

It can't have been the express. If it had been the express then this thread should have started 'Big Freeze', 'Arctic Blast', 'Siberian Killer Death Blast' or similar.

The papers usually report chill factor as temperature.

God knows why we now get this chill factor info anyway, it means nothing to me.
We all know it feels colder when the wind blows,.......Dont we?:dunno:

Well the next 2 weeks forecast here is dropping to 5°c by the weekend with night temps of 1 or 0 . So normal chilly winter weather not to severe. I don't believe anyone can forecast more than 2 weeks ahead with any plausible accuracy.
Did the Met office once start broadcasting long range ( 1 month ?) weather reports on the BBC. They soon stopped due to poor accuracy.

An amateur forecaster here said last autumn we're in for a big freeze in February, he's not known to be wrong but there's a first time for everything! :)
