Rosa Compassion. WOW!! Great blooms and hey! what a fast grower. My one produces stems of 3/4" dia in a season, so hard pruning is called for.

@ARMANDII that truly is a beautiful rose. Those are not the roses you find in shops.

I used to have a beautiful rose near my back door. It was sort of peach in colour. It grew to over 6 feet tall every year and flowered beautifully. Unfortunately it was a bit in the way. It grew across the path to the back yard. It was also a bit too close to where we needed to fit the dog/cat flap. What’s left of the Bush is a stump at ground level. It’s a shame I didn’t move it somewhere else first.

What are the chances of bringing a stump back to life?

Hi Jack, that would depend on how much of a stump there is and if there is any of the grafted rose still on the root stock.....that is if it is a grafted rose.

If there are no shoots showing on the grafted part of the rose it's more like the more aggressive root stock might throw out shoots.

If it's a rose that is a rose that has it's own natural root system then there's a chance that it might come back even if there is only one shoot showing. If you want to keep the rose stump and see what happens then leave it where it is and if there's no shoots showing by April then, probably, the rose is going to do nothing.:dunno::snorky:

@ARMANDII there’s been no shoots for years. I think it’s well and truly dead. :dunno: It’s a shame.

On a similar but different note. I have 2 red robin bushes that have grown unchecked into massive trees. One of them I cut right down to just above ground level. It started shooting again. It has now been cut down further and the shoots have stopped. I will dig the root out eventually. The other one is still growing for now. If I cut it right down would it grow back into a manageable shape? It would save me a lot of hard work if it did. If not, it will have to go.

If I lopped off a branch and stuck it in a bucket would it grow? A couple of years ago I tried to take cuttings but they didn’t grow. I’m sure I did it wrong.

No, it wont grow. Wait for a month or so then take softwood cuttings. Try 50/50 perlite and mpc and hormone rooting powder or gel.
I have cut photinias hard back.....to 2 or 3' from 8' or so.....and they (mostly) respond well. For me they are fickle shrubs and seem to suffer from die back. Here I had Red Robin, Pink Lady and a dwarf Red Robin and all have disqppointed me. :)

If the second one is showing signs of growth I would leave it to see what happens and over time just lightly prune it to get it into the shape you want.

I agree with Verdun. Now if that had been a Willow or Buddleja!!!!!!:hate-shocked::heehee:

Hi @Mike Allen thanks for the helpful tips but I only have to rose plants now..one in the back garden and the flower heads are big when they come and a nice one on the front and the roses that come on it are never endless. I do clip them back come autumn for winter and both of them now have new leaves developing :)
