It as taken me less than 2 weeks to fill my new compost bin.
I have been cutting down and shredding a lot of old shrubs.
Will it reduce quickly ?, or is that it.

    I'm back to square one.
The brown garden bin is also half full.
I have a lot more to do before the winter. :(

Thats just like me Lyn, that garotta compost maker stuff says 6 wks til it`s usable, but I`m not sure how true that is. I have been waiting 9 wks and still not done with mine.

I have had my bin 2 weeks now and it is full, should have got a bigger one but I don't do litres! Check it daily (sad) and am happy to report in is going down nicely did chuck a bucket of water on it as recommended never thought I could get excited by a compost bin. I to have a lot of clearing up to do just have to do it a bit of a time.

I got the biggest bin the council do.
    I don't do litres either.:D
I don't really have any room for another one.
I'll just have to start the tip run again.:(

Lyn, Couldn't you just put the excess in a strong garden bag next to your bin and top up your bin as it goes down, cause if it is doing its job should be quite soon think thats what I will do.

You can recycle 1m3 jumbo (non returnable) bulk aggregate bags into free good sized compost bins.
It keeps them out of the landfill for a bit longer ;)

I don't have any bin just some carefully tended heaps, it does reduce quickly, especially if there is a lot of green stuff. If it is turned and aired frequently it goes even quicker.

    I've added some water.
And I have found some strong compost bags to use that I can keep for a while until it starts to go down.
It's mostly shredded so It should start to reduce soon, I think.
I just need to add a bit more to it for a few more weeks then it can do it's thing until spring.
I think the bulk is now done.
    The problem is .
I'm a late starter with it.
    My own fault.
I have had so much cutting back to do this year as I was unable to do much last year due to an illness.
It all got a bit much and the shrubs got really over grown not being pruned for over 18 months..
But I seem to have broken the back of it now.
    Thanks for the info.

It seems to be a bumper year for garden waste as I've also filled three plastic bins and an open 4'x4' one too! Yesterday I had to fill old compost bags with prunings...six of 'em!:D. This is the first year I have used plastic bins and haven't yet got into the habit of continually taking compost out as opposed the emptying the open bins in the Autumn.
I'm considering just using open bins again,at least 'the sky's the limit' when heaping on the weekley grass cuttings:)

Lyn have u got a man in your house cause apparently their urine helps break the compost down quicker? We can't do it as we haven't got the same chemicals in our wee. Just gotta get my hubby to pee in a bottle now

Me thinks lady pee will work just as well, it's the nitrogen that makes the magic, not the hormones (wich is the only difference between he pee and she pee) ;) I think the "only he pee" legend arose because men are better equipped to pee on the composter (or in a bottle). :D
